Darlings Pre Budget Report
Great News - Cashflow support for many businesses through the HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) Business Payment Support Service will continue for as long as is necessary. The service allows businesses to agree more time to pay certain tax bills to HMRC, and has already helped over over 150,000 businesses defer payment of around £4bn of tax.
Top Tip: If you could do with the extra cash in your business to invest in growth strategies, its cheaper and easier than the bank.
Corporation Tax Break: Extension of the temporary increase in the empty property relief threshold for business rates from £15,000 to £18,000 for financial year 2010-11. The planned increase in the small companies’ tax rate from 21% to 22% will be deferred for an extra year so that it remains at 21 per cent until April 2011, benefiting 850,000 small businesses.
Top Tip: If your profits are in excess of £100,000 before tax and dividends we may be able to reduce the tax to 0%!!! We can meet in Wimbledon, London or Croydon or further afield (Leeds, Bristol,Norwich for example). Call us on 020 8241 3000 today.
An additional £500m of credit will be made available to small and medium sized businesses through a 12-month extension to the Enterprise Finance Guarantee (EFG), which has already supported over 6,500 firms with offers of loans totalling approximately £660m.
The creation of a new Growth Capital Fund to invest in small and medium sized businesses, targeting growing businesses seeking amounts of between £2 million and £10 million. The government is in discussion with banks and further announcements will be made in the new year.
Top Tip: Brace yourself for the conditions to qualify if recent experience is anything to go by!
The UK Innovation Investment Fund (UKIIF) will also ensure that £325 million of new venture capital is available to invest in Britain’s businesses and start ups in key sectors (life sciences, clean technology, digital and advanced manufacturing) from by early 2010.
Top Tip: Get prepared to apply early, before they get busy.
Introducing a reduced rate of Corporation Tax on income derived from patents from April 2013 (known as a 'patent box'), to strengthen the incentives to invest in innovative industries and ensure the UK remains an attractive location for innovation.
Top Tip:Remember to protect your inventions
The facility to claim Research and Development (R&D) Relief for Corporation Tax is being extended, under the SME Scheme. From the accounting period ending on or after 9 December 2009, SMEs will not be required to own the intellectual property derived from that R&D to be eligible for the Relief.
Top Tip: This is often overlooked. If you think you are doing some research that may qualify, alert us to this fact early. We may be able to save you some tax.
New funding of up to £5 million in enterprise support for ex-service personnel returning from conflict, reducing the costs and barriers associated with self-employment and setting up a new business.
Top Tip:This much needed support for those who deserve it most is good to see. Spread the word.
VAT Rate: it has been confirmed, as previously announced, that the rate of VAT will return to 17.5 per cent from midnight on 31 December 2009, following the temporary cuts to 15 per cent. You know my views on this whole fiasco...GDS. As a result of this, percentages under the VAT Flat Rate Scheme have been recalculated and will apply from 1 January 2010.
Top Tip: If you are not already using the Flat Rate Scheme, talk to us - we may be able to save you over £2,000.Also see the Pub and Resteraunt news below.
TAX Rise announced: There will be an increase of 0.5 per cent in the rate of employer, employee and self-employed National Insurance Contributions (NICs), in addition to the 0.5 per cent increase announced in PBR 2008. There will also be an increase in the point at which individuals start to pay NICs, meaning that 15 million people with incomes below £20,000 will be protected from this change.
Top Tip: Consider NIC simply another tax.Don't be fooled by the headline rates they want you to focus on, while they sneak these rises past you.
As part of a reform to the regulation of financial services, a new 50 per cent tax on discretionary bonuses will apply to the excess above £25,000 for bonuses paid between 9 December 2009 and 5 April 2010.
Top Tip: If you know anyone who will suffer this hike, call us immediately as we may be able to save them this massive increase.
November 2009
Pubs and Restaurant Accounting and VAT Clients Note
The government in its usually generosity has agreed to extend the 15% VAT rate till closing time or till 6am on New Years Day 2010 whichever earlier. Given that the decision to reduce VAT by just 2.5% last year cost small businesses millions in administration cost, this is a little too late. Never mind, make the best of it!
